Complete Precautions for Water-Cooled Diesel Generator Sets

I. Pre-Start Inspections (Mandatory)

1. Check the coolant level in the water tank, which shall stay between the upper and lower scale marks. Top up with antifreeze of the same specification if insufficient. Tap water is strictly prohibited as it causes limescale and cylinder liner corrosion. Antifreeze must be filled when ambient temperature drops below 5℃ in winter.

2. Inspect water pipes, radiator and water pump for leakage, aging and cracking; fasten all pipe clamps securely.

3. Clear dust, catkins and oil stains on radiator fins, as blockage will trigger overheat shutdown directly.

4. Check thermostat and fan belt tension: proper deflection of the belt under finger pressure is 10~15mm. Replace cracked or slipping belts immediately.

2. Fuel and Lubrication Systems

1. Check engine oil level with the dipstick 10 minutes after unit shutdown; maintain oil level at the middle mark. Change engine oil and oil filter after the first 50 operating hours for new or overhauled units.

2. Ensure sufficient diesel in the fuel tank. Drain water from the water-oil separator daily to avoid cylinder corrosion caused by water ingress.

3. Verify fuel pipes are leak-free and filters unclogged.

3. Electrical System & Basic Conditions

1. Confirm normal battery voltage, tight and oxidation-free wiring, and intact charging circuits.

2. Keep the output switch open; starting with load connected is forbidden.

3. Ensure good ventilation in the generator room. Though water-cooled units dissipate heat better than air-cooled ones, air circulation is still required for radiator cooling. The unit shall be fixed firmly on flat ground.
